Let’s talk about something fascinating that most people don’t realize: your gut and your brain are in constant communication. It’s called the gut-brain connection, or the gut-brain axis—and it’s a two-way street.
There’s actually a physical superhighway of nerves—especially the vagus nerve—that runs between your brain and your digestive system. Through this connection, they’re constantly exchanging information. The gut is often called the second brain. That means your thoughts and emotions can directly influence how hungry you feel, how full you feel, and even how satisfied you feel after a meal.

Dr. Alia Crum, a clinical psychologist at Stanford, conducted a study that blew people’s minds—literally. She gave two groups of people the exact same milkshake. Same ingredients. Same calories. But one group was told it was a high-calorie “indulgent” shake, labeled as 620 calories. The other group was told it was a low-calorie, sensible option—just 140 calories.
Here’s what happened: the group who believed they were drinking the indulgent shake showed a significantly greater drop in ghrelin—the hormone that signals hunger. Their bodies reacted as if they had eaten more, felt fuller, and were more satisfied.
But again, it was the exact same shake.
This is such a powerful example of how mindset doesn’t just influence thoughts—it changes biological responses. If believing something is indulgent can reduce hunger hormones, then imagine what else we can shift when we change our beliefs around food, fullness, and control.
